How to Pack Your Clothes for Storage

2/20/2019 6:44:00 PM by Boxit Canberra

Is your cupboard bulging and yet, in any given season, you seem to wear only half of what is in there? Are you returning from the university for summer, but don’t want to take all your stuff? Are you considering storing your winter clothes in the summer months and vice versa? Here’s all you need to know about packing clothes for storage!

If you take these six steps, your clothes will look as good as new again. Here is how to store clothes for the long term storage!

how to pack clothes for storage.

1. Wash It All:

The first step in the storage of clothes is to wash it. Inspect every item carefully for stains and dirt and ensure that it is removed before storing your clothes.

If you pack dirty clothes, the chances are that there will be stains or odours will built upon the items over time and you may never be able to remove them! In addition, dirty clothing attracts more insects and other vermin.

2. Do Not Vacuum Seal:

This step might seem surprising because there is a lot of chatter about storing clothes in sealed vacuum bags since it is a great space saver.

The truth is, vacuum sealing is good for your clothes only if you store it for a couple of weeks, not months.

If you store your clothes for a few months, the lack of air inside a vacuum bag can compress the fibers in your clothes and ruin their shape and fit.

3. Store in Plastic Container:

For long term storage use a plastic container with a clip-on lid, which protects the clothes against moisture, mould and dust. You can line the inside of the container with a clean cotton sheet for extra protection.

4. Choose a Professional Storage Unit:

A clean, cool, dark and dry storage unit is always best when storing your clothes. The easiest way to ensure that your warehouse meets all these requirements is to contact a professional storage company. These facilities are much superior to a humid garage or garden shed in order to keep your clothes safe.

5. Check your Clothes Periodically:

If you plan to leave clothes in storage for long periods of time–for example, if you store baby clothes until you have another child–check your storage box condition every six months or so.

This allows you to detect any possible problems and to avoid ruining your clothes.

Follow this step-by-step procedure and you will pull fresh, crease-free clothes out of storage.

How to Store a Rug- The best way to Store Your Carpet

2/20/2019 6:43:00 PM by Boxit Canberra

There are plenty of reasons that one might need to store a carpet. Maybe you’ve…

  • Done some remodelling to your living room and the rug doesn’t go with the new theme anymore;
  • The rug is too large for your new home or apartment you just move into;
  • Found a great bargain for a quality vintage rug but not sure how to use it yet.

Whatever the reason be, you have a rug, and you need to store it. This is no easy feast, an area rug even when rolled up can be quite large for storage.
To further complicate matters, storing your rug improperly can lead to water damage, bad odour or bug infestation.

To avoid such mishaps follow the below steps to ensure the longevity of your rug when in storage.

Step 1: Thoroughly Clean Your Rug

To prepare your rug for storage, give it a good clean. The cleaning style depends on the type of rug:

  • Woven rugs:  Lay the rug on a clean flat surface and using a carpet cleaning foam scrub the dirt out with a sponge and finishing by rinsing with cold water or vacuuming.
  • Handmade oriental rugs:  Using a nylon screen over your rug and then vacuuming over the screen is a great way to protect your delicate rug maintaining its handmade authenticity.
  • Grass rug:  Dirt easily settles on these natural fibre rugs, scrubbing them with a soft brush and soapy water will bring the rug back to life.

Step 2: Roll Up The Rug

Make a note not to fold the rug. Folding will create creases, cracks and other damages. Instead, roll your rug facing outward (rolling inward might protect the surface but strains the binding and glue on the back).

  • Start rolling your rug, keeping it as straight as possible. Ensure you are not rolling it too tight which damage the back of the rug.
  • Finish rolling your rug by wrapping the cotton sheet or muslin around the rug at least one and a half times to keep it protected. Secure the sheet with cotton or polyester tape Do not use plastic to wrap your rug, since it will keep it from breathing.

Step 3: Rug Storage

When storing your rug, it’s important to keep it in a location off the ground, safe from any harmful elements. Also, make sure nothing else lays on top of it. Boxes and other supplies can cause cracks and destroy the rug’s shape.

It is important to store your rug in a cool, dry environment without exposure to natural light.

To be safe, they also suggest unrolling your rug once a month to make sure there is no evidence of bug infestation. In addition, vacuum the area and the rug itself to eliminate any insect-attracting dust.
