Top 10 Raleigh Attractions
Raleigh, North Carolina was founded in 1792 and is known as the City of Oaks due to its abundance of oak trees. The city was named for Sir Walter Raleigh who sponsored the "lost colony" on Roanoke Island. In 2012, it had an estimated population of 423,179. Raleigh has been featured in Forbes, MSNBC, and Money Magazine for its quality of life and businesses. Most recently, it was listed as number three on Forbes 2013 list for best places for business and careers. Several notable people have been born in Raleigh, including: President Andrew Johnson; singer Clay Aiken; guitarists Doug Aldrich and Pete Carr; actors Michael C. Hall, Evan Rachel Wood, and Emily Proctor; baseball player Josh Hamilton; and basketball players Ryan Kelly, John Wall, and Chris Wilcox.
With all of its history, Raleigh is an interesting city to explore. Below is list of must-see attractions:
1. PNC Arena
Home of the Carolina Hurricanes. You'll find screaming fans enjoying this NHL Hockey Team.
2. North Carolina Museum of Art
Opened in 1956, with more than 40 galleries. It has a wide array of artists and an outdoor amphitheater.
3. The Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion
This is an outdoor amphitheater that specializes in hosting large concerts. Many popular artists perform here.
4. North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
The oldest museum in NC and the largest of its kind in the Southeast. It was established in 1879 and is four stories.
5. Marbles Kids Museum
Created in 2007, this is a hands-on, interactive experience for kids. There is also a five story IMAX screen.
6. Pullen Park
Opened in 1887 on over 66 acres. This park is famous for its Carousel made circa 1900. The park also includes picnic areas, concessions stands, a train, kiddie boats, and pedal boats.
7. North Carolina Museum of History
Established in 1902, this museum focuses on the state's military history, decorative arts, and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. The Museum Shop features NC crafts.
8. North Carolina State Capitol
The building opened in 1833. Until 1888, it housed the entire state government. Today, it houses the offices of the Governor.
9. Historic Yates Mill County Park
This park features a full restored gristmill circa 1756. It has a 20 acre lake and hiking trails. The visitor center has a museum on milling and natural history of the area.
10. North Carolina Executive Mansion
The mansion was opened in 1891. It is the official residence of the Governor.
