Frequently Asked Questions about Pacific Smiles Dental Point Cook

Tooth extraction can be completed in the Dental chair using local anaesthetic under intravenous sedation in the dental chair or under general anaesthetic in a private hospital. The extraction procedure may or may not involve surgery. The procedure will be determined by a patient’s health, age, the location of the tooth and the complexity of the root formation. Your Dentist will discuss the best treatment options for you and will require an x-ray of the tooth concerned in order to view the root location and formation and the density of the supporting bone.
Veneers are thin porcelain or composite resin facings that are bonded to the front of teeth. They are between 0.3mm and 0.5mm thick and are often used as an alternative to crowns. They are extremely thin and in most cases require less of the natural tooth to be removed when compared to crowns. Composite & Porcelain Veneers are strong and durable making them a popular cosmetic dental treatment for smile makeovers.

Whitening procedures are typically carried out at home by the patient following a consultation with a dentist. Teeth whitening may not be appropriate for all patients so before commencing any whitening procedure it is best to discuss expected outcomes and time frames with a dentist.
Sleep Dentistry through general anaesthetic procedures are carried out in private hospitals using the latest in specialised dental equipment and materials. Patients are required to visit a participating Pacific Smiles Dental Clinic for a consultation (including a dental examination and diagnostic x-rays). Arrangements are then made with the appropriate private hospital where their dental treatment will be provided by an accredited dentist from Pacific Smiles Dental. Most dental patients are admitted as day-only patients and ordinarily discharged within 2 hours of their procedure. Contact your local centre to find out if they offer sleep dentistry via general anaesthetic. As an alternative sleep dentistry can also be carried out under sedation in selected Dental Clinic. Sedation options available include relative analgesia such as Nitrous Oxide (also known as laughing gas) and intravenous sedation. Relative analgesia such as nitrous oxide is inhaled by the patient and assists in reducing anxiety. Intravenous sedation is administered by an Anaesthetist or doctor with training in intravenous sedation in the Dental Clinic and involves a combination of sedative and pain relieving medicaments to create a drowsy and dream-like state of deep calming relaxation for the entire duration of the dental procedure.
Root Canal Therapy may be required if the nerve or pulp of a tooth has become infected or irreversibly inflamed.

The practice of orthodontics requires professional skills in the design application and control of corrective appliances (such as braces) to align teeth lips and jaws to achieve facial balance and straight teeth.
One of the first gum disease symptoms is often bleeding gums. Gums become inflamed and can also be tender and painful red or swollen. Other gum disease symptoms can include bad breath and a bitter taste in the mouth upon waking after sleep. Gums which have shrunk from the teeth abscesses between teeth and gums and loose teeth are symptoms of more advanced gum disease.
Patients with gum disease have an infection of the gums and or bone that surround and support their teeth. Gum disease can affect patients of all ages and is one of the major factors contributing to bad breath, tooth pain and tooth loss.
Aligners are custom-made for each patient, with each aligner worn for approximately two weeks. Each individual aligner is slightly different to the one before. By changing aligners every two weeks, your teeth are moved gently into the desired location. Your specialist orthodontist or Invisalign-trained dentist guides the whole process.
Generally, you should book your child in for their first check-up around 12 – 18 months old. These early visits are more about getting your kids used to the dentist and setting them up for a lifetime of good oral hygiene.

Dental implants can be thought of as artificial roots that are securely anchored in the jaw. When a tooth has suffered a blow and has been knocked out completely getting to the dentist as fast as possible will be important. If the tooth is clean place it straight back in the socket. Be careful, however, to face it correctly and not touch the root. Grip the crown of the tooth only (the part you can normally see in the mouth). If the tooth is dirty rinse it in milk before placing it back in the socket. Bite lightly on some gauze to keep it in place while heading to the dentist. The tooth needs to be re-planted within 30 minutes for best results.
Baby teeth start to emerge between 4 and 10 months of age. The first teeth to appear are usually in the middle of the lower gum. There is a wide range of normal so there is no need to panic if your little one is a little early or a little past the 10-month mark. While the addition of a tooth is an exciting milestone it can be a pretty exhausting lead-up to the tooth finally appearing. If you think your baby is experiencing discomfort due to teething applying a cool soft cloth to the gums and giving them sugar-free teething rusks or chilled teething rings to chew on may help relieve this. Distraction also works wonders – so provide plenty of love and attention.
Aesthetically Invisalign is a lot more discreet than metal braces. Being clear the aligners are barely noticeable when they are in your mouth and can be removed to eat and drink reducing the traditional problem of having to be careful with what foods you consume while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Aligners are also made of smooth plastic so the irritation and discomfort often associated with metal brackets and wires are avoided.
